Strong visual deterrence, but not verifiable on its own. Here is the honest picture.
A hologram label carries an optical layer whose appearance shifts with the viewing angle. Producing it requires specialised equipment and tooling, which makes casual reproduction harder than ordinary printing.
Visual deterrence. Customers read a hologram as a familiar trust signal, and a counterfeiter faces an additional production barrier. On the shelf it differentiates the brand.
A hologram is not verifiable. A customer cannot tell by looking whether the hologram in their hand is genuine or a good imitation, and there is no way for them to check. This is the single most misunderstood point about hologram labels.
When your goal is visual deterrence, brand perception and low unit cost, a hologram is an appropriate choice.
When you want customers to verify the product themselves. A hologram produces no record, no query and no data.
In practice the strongest configuration pairs the two: a holographic surface with a scratch-off QR code beneath. The hologram deters at a distance; the QR proves at close range. See scratch-off QR labels.
Holographic surfaces are reflective, which can interfere with scanning any code printed on them. If a barcode or QR shares the label, it should sit on a non-holographic panel.
