In variable work the design must survive not one output but thousands of different ones.

What Is Variable Design?

Variable design is building the template for a job whose content changes at print time. In conventional design a single output is prepared and duplicated. In variable design a rule set is prepared: which field goes where, what happens if a value is longer than expected, how the layout behaves when a field is empty.

Why It Is a Separate Discipline

A visually perfect label can fall apart when driven by real data. The designer types "Serum 30ml" as a sample; the real record reads "Intensive Repairing Overnight Facial Serum 30 ml" and the text runs over the barcode. That is not a design error but a rule error — and if it is found after printing, the whole run is scrap.

Rules We Apply

  • Design to the longest value, not the average one.
  • Define overflow behaviour: shrink the point size, wrap to a second line, or truncate — with a defined lower limit.
  • Account for empty fields so stacked layouts do not leave gaps.
  • Never encroach on barcode clearance. The quiet zone is not available design space.
  • Allow for language expansion. German text runs longer than English; Arabic changes direction entirely.
  • Separate fixed from variable so logos and legal text are never accidentally bound to a data field.

Can you make our existing design variable?
Yes. We separate it into layers, define fixed and variable fields, and propose adjustments to any field at risk of overflow.
Which file format should we send?
AI, PDF or INDD with fonts embedded or supplied. If only JPG or PNG exists the design has to be rebuilt.
Does the point size shrink automatically if text does not fit?
It can, but a lower limit must be set. Uncontrolled shrinking produces unreadable text. We usually define a floor and report records that fall below it.
Do you support right-to-left languages?
Yes. In RTL languages not only the text but the layout direction changes; field alignment is built accordingly.
What should I check on the proof?
The sample built from the longest record. If text does not overflow, nothing intrudes on barcode clearance and empty fields do not break the layout, the run is safe.
